we watched the sun go down again
over the mountains from the border
of Quebec and NY
that day Lake Champlain was glowing

and sometimes sunset makes me wonder
about the many who worked these fields
or made their livings in the forest
all those who drank from these waters

were they waiting
waiting for grace?
all of the living
waiting for grace?

sometimes I feel like extra freight
getting older and gaining weight
what seemed to matter matters little anymore
and I don't feel I'm so important

the flapping wings and the gnashing teeth
all the ads that say "hey look at me"
all those pushers and their products
and all those wishing for the end of the world

do you think they're waiting
waiting for grace?
that all of us living
are waiting for grace?
but what are you giving
while you wait you for grace?

all of these creatures are my brethren
and all of those who wonder
about the way things might have been
for all historians are dreamers

and I'm still waiting
